When Dav Whatmore took over as Bangladesh's coach
after the 2003 World Cup, one of his first tasks was to locate a
spinner to partner the effective, but aging, left-armer Mohammad
Rafique. In Enamul Haq junior, Whatmore appears to have found his
man. Born in the hill country of Sylhet, on the eastern border of
Bangladesh, there was some confusion about Enamul's age when he was
selected to play for the Board President's XI in the opening fixture
of England's 2003-04 tour - most people had him down as 18, although
some reports reckoned he might be two years younger. But that was as
nothing compared to the confusion he caused England's batsmen. In a
giddy post-lunch spell on the second afternoon, England lost four
wickets for no runs, including three to Enamul. It was an effort
that propelled him straight into the side for the inaugural Test the
following week, where in tandem with Rafique, he bowled with skill
and impressive composure to embarrass England's batsmen once again.
He gives the ball a big rip with a high, economical action, and
looks set to be a fixture in the side for some time
