Chris Martin made a remarkable comeback to Test
cricket after almost two years out of the side with 11 wickets and
the Man of the Match award against South Africa at Auckland in
2003-04. More wickets in the following Tests helped him to picked
for the tour of England in 2004 and then the tour of Bangladesh in
2004-05. It represented a change in fortune for Martin, who
struggled for opportunities earlier in his career. He was originally
called-up during New Zealand's injury hiatus in South Africa in
2000-01. He performed well and remained a part of the side for the
next 12 months, playing a key role in New Zealand's record victory
over Pakistan at Hamilton in 2000-01. However, the emergence of
Shane Bond, Ian Butler, Daryl Tuffey and Jacob Oram forced Martin
out of the team
