Profile

An outstanding allrounder at schoolboy level, Lokuarachchi stepped up to the Sri Lankan squad in the aftermath of the 2003 World Cup. Primarily a legspinner, he is capable of maintaining great discipline on unreceptive surfaces. Also a tough, well-organised batsman and a lively fielder, there had been high hopes that he would be able to pin down a regular place. But a fatal late-night car crash in Aug 2003 was followed by a four-month disciplinary ban. Some good performances though in the 2004 Provincial Tournament eased him back into contention and returned briefly against Australia. However, he was held back by the lack of bite in his stock legbreak and drifted back into the A team. But having worked hard on his action, he was called up after Murali's shoulder injury and then grabbed his place in the Champions Trophy squad during the South Africa one-day series.
