Elton Chigumbura, who was fast-tracked into the
Zimbabwe national side in the absence of the 'rebel' players, made
his first-class debut for Mashonaland in the Logan Cup at the age of
only 15. In Zimbabwean domestic cricket he is a genuine allrounder,
an aggressive batsman at No. 4 No. 5 and a seam bowler who comes on
as first or second change. He is a product of the ZCU development
programme and took to the game at Chipembere Primary School in the
Highfield township of Harare. A protégé of coach Stephen Mangongo,
he won a ZCU scholarship to Churchill High School and plays for
Takashinga Sports Club. He has represented Zimbabwe in two Under-19
World Cups and is in his fourth year with that squad. He took four
wickets in the Zimbabwe's sensational victory over Australia in the
Under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh, and despite looking out of his
depth on Test debut against Sri Lanka, he looked a much-improved
player by the time of the Champions Trophy five months later. He
represents Mashonaland in the Logan Cup and has been selected as a
member of the CFX Academy for 2004
